Games will be played up to 15 points. If there is no winner after 12
minutes (running time), the team with the lead will be declared the
winner. In the event of a tie, play will continue and the team that
scores the next basket will be the winner.
Score will be by 2's and 3's. 2 points for a regular basket and 3
points for a basket shot from behind the 3 point line. Each court
will have a marked 3 point arc.
Court will have marked sidelines, baselines, and a half-court line.
Games will be "losers out." This means that the team that is scored
upon will begin the next possession with the ball.
Games will use the "check" policy. This means that the team starting
out a new possession after a basket must pass the ball to a player
from the opposing team who will pass it back to start play only when
his team is set and ready.
If possession changes during the course of play (steal, blocked shot,
missed shot, rebound, turnover, etc.), the team that gains
possession may not shoot or score until they have cleared the ball
beyond the 3 point arc. All missed shots recovered by the opposing
team must be cleared even airballs.
At the start of a possession the player holding the ball may not take
a shot himself. The player must start the possession by making at
least one pass to a teammate.
In preliminary round play, there will not be a referee for each game.
Instead, there will be a court monitors who are in charge of
monitoring the multiple games being played in each gym. The monitor's
role is to supervise the tournament action, ensure that all rules of
play are being followed, and maintain order and a spirit of fun but
competitive play. The court monitor will step in and make rulings in
the event of any dispute in an individual game.
In preliminary round play, without referees for each game, fouls will
be called by the players themselves. These rounds will use the "honor
system." Players should only call fouls when it is an obvious
infraction that had a clear impact on the course of play. It is
important that players use good judgment when deciding whether to call
a foul. Equally important is that players respect calls made by their
competitors. Players may call any infraction including physical fouls
(hacking, reaching in, over-the-back) and other violations (traveling,
out of bounds, etc.)
The court monitor will also be responsible for ensuring the good
sportsmanship of all participants. In cases of poor sportsmanship the
court monitor (and in later rounds, the referee) will have the power
to step in and if necessary, eject a player or forfeit a team for
negative behavior.
BTC 3on3 rules call for no profanity or excessive "trash-talking".
Players are expected to participate with a spirit of competitive fun.
In the elimination rounds each game will have a referee and all calls
and supervision will be the responsibility of the referee. The
referee will keep score and time.
Substitutions made be made after made baskets or on new possessions
involving a stop in play (out of bounds, foul). There is no limit to
the number of substitutions during a game.
Teams are expected to be ready to play at the scheduled time of the
game. Teams will have at least 5" to warm up on the court before the
game. If a team is not present with at least 3 members ready to play
ten minutes after the scheduled game time, the team will forfeit the
game.
The preliminary round will be in a "group play format." Teams will
be placed in a group of 4 teams. The first round will consist of each
of the four teams playing each other. Each team will play three
games. Only the team with the best record will advance out of a
group. In the event of a tie (two or more teams have the same
record), the team with the best cumulative (3 game total) point
differential will advance.
